downfall of wikipedia?

This article from MIT technology review makes some great points. They are right there is no free information hub quite like Wikipedia. With all the good that Wikipedia does there are some downfalls like the articles mentions such as vandalism, hoaxes and manipulation. I have never regarded as Wikipedia as a high quality source of information because if its editing abilities although that is what makes it great in some aspects. Overall, this article goes into an in-depth look into the ongoing problems, such as how to verify true information, how to monitor the posts, the virtual editor, and Wikipedia's bureaucracy that Wikipedia is facing and how they are planning to or failing at fixing them.

A statistics that comes up a lot and is even mentioned in Ron's blog post that 90% of the editors are male. What does this mean to you in terms of content?

Live Person

I have been involved in creating a new tool for Psychology FSU students this summer. I am very excited about it because it is something that we have never tried before and I was able to pioneer something that I believe in and can relater to this class.

Live person is an online advising tool where students can go to our website and click the live chat features and talk to an advsior live to answer general questions. No longer do students have to drive to campus and be denied help because the office is packed. Now they can ask their general questions online and leave the in person advising for more serious and needed time such as major changes or missed requirements.

The system is not perfect but it is a step into the social media world. Not all questions can be answered via online advising due to federal laws and information that cannot be given over the internet but it can help student who have general questions get their questions answered from the comfort of their couch.

We have a twitter account and a active Facebook like page where we post a lot of information hoping that this is a better way to engage students. Using the social media tools such as Twitter and Facebook for education purpose I think makes us a a forerunner in getting information to our students in a way that is convenient for them.

Goodyear

I think they come up with a great research. Using social media to facilitate learning is what we try to do everyday in this class. Using several tools, although in Goodyear case they focused on Facebook and Twitter. I think if they had incorporated slideshare they would have seen even better results in teacher cooperation and sharing. I am a huge fan of slideshare as an educational tool because it is a professional site for people to post their original content and have it be known that this is what they are teaching us. I do believe that social media should change their practices as like they state provide an outside location to do so. Social media is a great learning, teaching and collaborative tool that can be used to work on great things and share ideas. I agree with their concluding statement that social media in teaching setting should not be a requirement but voluntary if they would find it helpful.

Quora

Quora

This is a perfect example of how many interesting and helpful websites are out there that I have never heard about before. The web is so vast even when I were to Google questions, I usually get wikianswers or some random blog site. I had never heard of Quora before this class but it has unique features I enjoy.

I like that you can choose topics and follow questions that are based on what you like to do. Also, you can see whats trending now as well as write your own question and add your input to others. It reminds me a Google search for a specific topic of interest.

Social Media and Psychology

My background is in Psychology and linking the two worlds is very easy. Psychology is all about human behavior and how we interact with one another which is exactly what social media allows us to do.
The first article goes through general questions about social media and how it effects our relationships. I know we have all explored a lot with communication online and what I have found form our communities is that online interaction can be personal and in depth and have that experience as if you are getting to know someone in person. It allows for that more convenient interaction. I think the articles gives some simple basic answers to the questions people pose about social media.

The next article is from Psychology Today and it goes into more depth of the experience using social media and how that translates to interaction. Something they address that I think is a major issue is social cues. I know that when I read a text there are about 100 ways it can be interpreted. They suggest that punctuation and emoticons can mimic some the social and facial expression cues that are missing when interacting through social media, but so you really get the full picture?

Social Media Outcomes!

This presentation from Harvard I think has some really cool insight into instructional design and use of social media. They have a basic easy to use logic model on page 29 that explains the success and output of social media. There is also a chart on some outcomes they have notices from Instructional designs using social media and how they measured those outcomes! I wish I was at the conference this was presented at because it has some great interactive polls and good information! It also uses terms that we are familiar with so if you are interested, check it out!

Gooooooooogle OOhh the places you will go

Google Maps

Searched my work address, clicked on the little man in the corner and VOILA! There was a picture of my building! How crazy is that, that in order to see a place all you have to do is search for it on Google maps and place your little man there.Talk about technology.

Google Map Maker

I opened Google Map Maker and tried to create my own map but on 7/20/15 at 12:30pm the site was unavailable for editing. But I will not let this get me down! I will return to the map making site, add a place and publish it on my blog! (keep your eyes peeled!)

What is it?
Map maker is place where you can add to the actual Google maps site!  This is a great example of crowdsoursing. Allowing many people to come together to form a big picture of our world.
You can also create your own maps and

I found some helpful directions (for when it decides to let me add a place) to add a place!
Add a place
  1. Open Map Maker.
  2. Click Add New in top left.
  3. Select Add a Place from the drop-down menu.
  4. Select the Satellite view and zoom in to the appropriate location. ...
  5. Select a category from the drop-down menu, or start typing in the box to search for a category. ...
  6. Click Continue to add more details in the left panel.

What place will you add??

Vlog 3

Hello! This is week 3 Vlog and I am on my way to the gym which is why I look a little different! My online running community is amazing and they are encouraging me to continue my running even on days I am extremely busy! But this time I kept it very short, only 2 minutes of information and 1 mins of bloopers! "If you can't laugh at yourself then who can you laugh at" - Tiger Woods

Let me know what you think! I am constantly improving my vlogs based on comments so please tell me, I promise I will listen and adapt! As an example, you can thank Michelle Cates for the shorter video this week, I took her fabulous suggestion! Also, I mentioned Nicole Avarello in the video from her Discussion Board post!

Word Clouds

Word Clouds are always something I saw and would have created in a word document that would have taken me forever! I thought word cloud was going to be another book/reading tool that I wasn't going to enjoy but I LOVE word clouds. I think they are a professional way to get a general overview of what the presentation or topic is going to be talked about. I made one using wordit and it came out okay. Would anyone like to give me a topic that I could make a word cloud about??! I think any business, class, or school can use a word cloud on their website because it allows others to see what you are all about in a short little cloud that is eye catching and unique. This would be a great branding and marketing tool.

Here it is!

Unbibliophilia

Goodreads         - Image credit -  pixabay

I look as stir- crazy as this worm does when I read a book...

I am not so much a sit down and read a book type of persons. I like to be up and moving or having some physical activity. Even to relax I prefer to take a jog. My experiences, so far, with goodreads I have realized is not a tool I will use after this course. My boss at work loves to read and is even in a book club so I have asked her for some suggestions and looked them up on goodreads as well as used the recommendations tool. Still I think I rather watch the movies of the recommended books. Even when I watch movies or TV at home, I am rarely vegetating on the couch, I am usually cooking or cleaning while I watch.

LibraryThing

Again, not my thing. I appreciate those who do enjoy reading and respect that. I prefer podcasts and maybe an audio book would be better suited for me but this online book tools do not seem to fit my lifestyle. I think someone who loves and enjoys books these sites would be great for them and I will probably suggest it to my boss! Having all the books you've read and are going to read in one place sounds fantastic and being able to share that with others and talk about the books seems like a good idea for people into books.

The title of this blog post is UnBibliophilia coming form the root word Bibliophilia which means love of books and Un- meaning not - basically in my mind translates to - not a lover of books.

Flickr

Hello!

Watching all the creative commons and copyright laws I have decided to upload discussion and share an image I found and give them credit!

The image is one I found on flickr and it does a nice job of separating the different types of social media sites we use and categorizes them into sections. I think this follows along in the course because a lot of the time we have been exploring tools in these sections each week. They even have diigo, delicious and pinterest!  Based on these categories which is your favorite??

Social Media - Good or Bad for Employment

Social Media: Good or Bad to employers

I have always heard students and teachers saying whenever applying to graduate school or professional job to either delete your social media accounts and or change your name (although some sites such as Facebook say this is against the rules) but I see my friend, i.e. Jessica Valentine turn into Jesea Valintine (slight rearrangement of letters and play on words). That way her friends still know who she is but employers and schools have a harder time finding her. Times Inc. network published an article about the ten most common mistakes that cause millennials to lose their jobs. This was always my perspective, based on my experience of watching my friends post inappropriate pictures on social media. http://time.com/money/3019899/10-facebook-twitter-mistakes-lost-job-millennials-viral/

This was always what I thought until I came across and articles published July 10th about social media presence enhancing profile!! At first I was like no way, but then I thought about. If you use social media in a educational and not personal way I could see how this would be beneficial like the article states. It could foster educational relationships and show that you have knowledge of your field. http://www.lansingstatejournal.com/story/money/business/2015/07/10/use-social-media-enhances-profile-employers/29855329/

Vlog 2

After several tries and lots of editing! Here it is! Vlog #2

PLNs

PLNs

Personal Learning Networks
Are networks that take time an energy and something that could be beneficial to have if used appropriately. What I mean is  you have to make sure to have the time to commit to a PLN. A PLN doesn't grow overnight nor does it go out and find followers for you. You have to make sure you fully engage in your PLN for it to be effective. A PLN is something that my boyfriends ten year old sister would create, probably on the topic of singing, spend hours and hours the first three days on it, get bored and never look at it again. That is not what PLN intentions are, it is meant to be a continuation and sharing of knowledge with a growing group of people interested in your topic.

The different types of PLN's are large and small. Basically, if you wanted to interact with every respondent that you got on your PLN, small is the way to go. If you rather just lurk and comment occasionally and use Dr. Dennen " start where you are" motto, a larger PLN would be for you.

What is other peoples opinions on the Analytic tools, such as Klout?

I personally feel they are a bit overdone and something that is no longer organic but transformed into a numbers game. Although, I understand they could be helpful, in my opinion I prefer to know through action that I am making a difference in peoples lives. To me making a drastic impact on one life is more important than briefly touching a hundred lives. The first would give you a low Klout score... but you did a good thing and I think that is where it is being ignored. It shows quantity over quality.

Diigo

Diigo a.k.a Information Hub!

What is it?
If you wanted to share and keep a place for all your information Diigo is the place to do it. It provides a place to store your bookmarked information, connect it to your blog, add other blogs to monitor and so much more! You can use it to edit webpages that you would like remember or revisit and open those edits in any other device. Also, you can download pages/articles to read when you do not have internet access, which is probably my favorite feature that I have learned about.

My experience:
So far I have found Diigo to not be ultra user friendly. It seems as if its hard to navigate and figure out how to get to different places but perhaps it is just me. I am not sure if this is a tool I will be using outside of this class just because I am not sure I want this website to have all my bookmarked sites/passwords and so much information. Also, I prefer to read hard copies than via eBooks or books online. If you are having trouble with Diigo, I highly recommend this video on the blackboard site.

Based on articles shared by Dr, Dennen in the EME6414 group it seems like a great place to find scholarly articles. I think this website is much different then the only ones we have so far explored in the class which have had a heavy social and original post aspects to it. I feel like Diigo is trying to do too much and therefore instead of doing one thing spectacular it just does a bunch of things so so. Personally, I think it could be jazzed up a bit with some colors.

I have found some interesting articles such as what education technology could look like over the next five years by Katrina Schwarts (link). I have shared through the Diigo tool bar to Twitter!

What have you done with Diigo so far?

Pinterest

Pinterest

As I was reading the discussion board post on Pinterest, I thought I would continue my exploration of this new tool in the class that was introduced this week on my blog. My use of pinterest was never educational and none of my friends had used ti for educational purposes. I had followed recipes for healthy eating and when my dessert cravings came I also followed dessert pages. Also, pinterest was a major tool in my community service sorority, Delta Nu Zeta. Since I had to make little gifts and big appreciation presents look in pinterest for sorority ideas was a huge help!

I followed the links provided on the course site and found that Pinterest is a good way to get products out there. I often found images of Etsy created items and thought about purchasing them. This was the marketing tool of Pinterest at work. I found this great simple page with five ways to incorporate Pinterest into an organization that is focused around a product.

I think this also could be helpful for educational purposes in the sense that if there was a template that could be posted or to find design to present information Pinterest can be a great place to start for ideas. Also, for younger education this could be a way to display children's work in the classroom for parents and administration to recognize that Mrs/ Smith class is making paper mache globes and how they are coming out.

I have created a EME6414 board in my pinterest account in order to save templates and cute saying that I think relate to the course!

Happy Pinning!

Week 2 - Update

Hello!!

I am thinking of topics for my vlog post tomorrow and I was wondering if any of my classmates had any cool ideas or topics that wanted to be addressed in it! My communities are flourishing with information and conversations. How are yours going?

I enjoyed Lukas interactive blog with a short quiz on FoMo. I couldn't run on Monday but I an ran two miles yesterday! Getting there!

Here is a link to a quiz/slideshow for my running people! It helps determine what running style best suits you!

Fitness

Hello!

So I have decided to incorporate my communities into my blog. I have been interacting with a running community and have been encouraged to use a exercise ticker to monitor my progress! My goal for this week is a slow and steady 10 miles. Since I have several months until my half marathon, I decided to start out slow! I will update this every day or every other day to keep you up to date on my running progress.

On a side note I have decided to start to study for a group fitness certification! Still in the early stages and will take several months to complete but I will update you on my progress with that as well!

That's a Wrap

That is a wrap of week one in EME6414!

This week has been a large learning experience for me but a good one. I have been able to manage a lot of the new tools and keep up to date with new trends and topics. I now plan to post a vlog one a week. I have enjoyed the readings, the Networked book is really eye opening in terms of what social media can do, Kietzman also breaks down the social media in a work place. I can relate to the Kietzman article because at my work currently we are trying to get online academic advising which will hopefully make it easier and help student get on the correct path! I am enjoying observing my communities and I look forward to participating and lurking in the communities. Overall, great week and I look forward to engaging in more tools as we go!

Trying to Vlog

Hello EME6414!
This is a new social media avenue I am trying out, VLOGS!
If you have any familiarity with them I would love comments and hints!
Tell me what you think!

Day 3

So far in my use of a feed readers I have been able to add several of my classmates blogs which are very interesting and keep up with the conversations happening in each blog. I am still fiddling around trying to find my communities for my paper. I have thought about a few but they were solely blogs and not full fledged communities. I am looking forward to being a part of an online community as well as observing one! I enjoy learning new things and so far three days in I have learned so much! As I saw in some other blogs there was a suggestion of using vlogs (video blogs), so keep an eye out because one could be coming your way soon!
